Hoverflies

Hoverflies at Spennells

Hoverflies play a very important part of nature's pollination process.
Hoverflies do not sting!

Started recording these May 2019, be interesting to see how many I can find and with over 280 species recorded in the UK I am hopeful a few may arrive at Spennells.

This one is a Chrysotoxum cautum commonly known as a wasp mimic, has eveolved to look very similar to a wasp in order to deter predators.
There are also Hornet and Bee mimics.




Below is one of the most common hoverflies, the Marmalade Fly Episyrphus balteatus
