Had a busy morning so didn't get out till well after lunch, quiet in the reserves, but on Captain's I was glad to see a Great Crested Grebe, hopefully a second one will arrive soon, managed a few photos but nothing special, also a Cormorant was fishing up by the island, as for gulls, at one point I would estimate around 300 on the pool.
I spotted a fox as well this afternoon but was out of sight before I could get a shot, but looked to be much older than the one I photographed the other day, certainly made my day seeing it.
Several flocks of Linnets and Chaffinch about, no sign of the Stonechat but hardly surprising as there was a white cat prowling around amongst the weeds.
Buzzard was quite active at the back of the Dead Man's Allotment but being so far away I couldn't get any decent shots.
Huge flock of Mistle thrushes and fieldfare were sent up by something, possibly a male sparrowhawk as there was one which dropped into a flock of Linnets in the carrot field.
Great Crested Grebe
Mistle Thrush
Few gulls on the pool.
The corn field at around 16.00
Looking over the Dead Man's Allotment.
Sunday 17th Feb
A dull start to the day, undeterred off I went up to the Pool, all quiet there though, a stroll up Ghost Lane revealed more of the same, very quiet, saw a few flocks of mainly Chaffinch on the way down to Stanklyn, Dead Man's Allotment was really dead, didn't even see a buzzard.
Spotted several Mistle Thrushes in Heath Paddock.
AS I was out on the afternoon I extended my walk to the lower reserves as well, but much the same, very quiet, lots of magpies and a couple of Jays down in the three pools reserve.
Sadly a boring report, sorry, just hoping it will get more interesting at some point or I may start pulling out my hair.
But I can honestly say I still enjoyed my walk, have to enjoy my walks around Spennells, can't beat stopping and having a natter with other people who are out and about.
Saturday 16th Feb
Family day out, so just a quick nose up at Captain's early on, not much to report, just the usual scene, chaffinches in the reserve, couple of Siskins and Greenfinches up Ghost Lane and a few crows in Pirates Wood.
Few Goldfinches feeding on the weeds in the carrot field.
Could hear a GS Woodpecker drumming quite loudly in the reserve by the pool.
And that was it, had to dash, hope for a better report in the morning.
Friday 15th February 2019
Really nice day, clear skies and sunshine all the way after an early morning frost, downside I had someone installing a new fence at home, so only 15 minutes spare this morning, saw 2 Gooseanders on the pool and the usuals.
After Lunch I met up with Jason Kernohan and we had a great walkabout, spotted many different species and also the same fox that I spotted yesterday.
Was hoping we may have seen our first butterfly of the year but no luck although a few bees about.
Linnets, too many Chaffinch to count, Meadow Pipits, great to see the Stonechat was in the Dead Man's Allotment, sadly no sign of a buzzard but we did see a Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk.
Also many many crows gathering over the back of the Paddocks.
Saw few Long Tailed Tits the one just taking off could have been good if it had been nearer.
Great to see and hear the Skylarks over the fields.
On Captain's we saw the heron, a moorhen, a cormorant on it's favourite stump, couple Canadian Geese and the usual gulls and mallards.
Having a rest in the sunshine
