more hoverflies and the heron

Sunday May 12th

Afraid the photos will have to tell the story as it has been very quiet around the reserves and the pool the past few days.
Do check out my post from Friday 10th as I think it's my best wildlife photo to date.

Friday May 10th

Pleasant morning by the pool, watched the heron for a few hours then late morning I went out to see what insects I could spot, but with lots of cloud cover they were quiet.

Hoverfly - male Criorhina floccosa

Hoverfly - Female Sphaerophoria sp

As above

Mint Moth - Pyrausta Aurata

With a lot of the birds nesting and the tree growth restricting the view of some birds I have been spending a lot of my time watching some local herons, sorry in advance about the amount of pics here, but I am fascinated by them.

Thursday May 9th

Weather absolutely awful, rained on and off most of the day, but I had to get out this afternoon, got a bit wet but I had about 90 minutes watching the heron perched precariously on these very thin branches, this bird has a lot more patience, but he has also taught me patience, sadly he didn't catch a fish while I was there.

Wednesday May 8th

No photos today, wednesday is my busy day, I did get a few minutes up the pool and spotted a grass snake which I hadn't seen before, strong tint of blue in the colouring, a bit too quick for me though, only a young one I think.

Tuesday 7th May

Pleasant start, GC Grebe still sitting on the nest at Captain's, can't be long now till we see some little humbugs.
Had a walk around the reserves and was very quiet, when the sun was up higher and it had warmed up I decided to hunt for hovers and concentrated on this one small area, about 30 metres long and is a lovely suntrap before lunchtime, it's the short walkway from the front field to the main road.

One of those occasions when I wish I'd had the big lens with me, he was just devouring a frog when I spotted him.

Large Red Damselfly, lots of these about this morning.

After lunch we had a pleasant walk around Chaddesley Woods, always nice to see the bluebells, heard lots of birds singing, amny more than usual, saw Orange tip, small tortoiseshell butterflies, plus a small white one, at first glance I thought it was a green veined but it wasn't, sadly no pic but think I will be popping back again very soon.
